Happy Pride!

Updates from Libby

Dear Friends,

Happy Pride! And please accept my warmest greetings of solidarity and hope to our community.

By the time you read this, I would have just finished participating at the Conference on Human Rights at the 2009 World Outgames in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I found it thrilling and inspiring to be able to speak to international delegates and share the fact that Canada is a leader in recognizing the full humanity and full human rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans Canadians. And New Democrats have been front and centre in leading the way on many of these accomplishments.

At the local level, I was delighted to speak, along with my colleague Bill Siksay (MP for Burnaby Douglas) at Camp Fyrefly on Gambier Island. This is Canada’s only national retreat for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-identified, two-spirited, intersexed, queer, questioning, and allied youth. It is designed to help young people to develop the leadership skills and fortitude required to help them be leaders in their schools, family, and communities.

From these experiences, I can tell you that there is much to celebrate, and plenty of hope, in our community. But we must always be vigilant to uphold our rights, and ensure that there is no backsliding on our hard-won victories. And I am committed to standing alongside you every step of the way!

In Pride and Solidarity,

Libby Davies, MP (Vancouver East)
