FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 21, 2013
On behalf of New Democrats from coast-to-coast-to-coast, I join Canadians in paying tribute to the vital role that Canada’s indigenous peoples have played in our great country for generations.
Today is an important day for celebrating the rich culture and history of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis. We must also use occasions like today to redouble our efforts to end the historic injustices that still impact indigenous peoples—while working together toward a true nation-to-nation relationship that benefits everyone.
This year we’ve seen an unprecedented mobilization of indigenous communities. First Nations, Inuit and Métis of all ages are fed up with the paternalistic approach of both Liberal and Conservative governments. Instead of partnership and collaboration, Canada’s indigenous peoples continue to face broken promises and unfulfilled dreams. The status quo is not working.
This summer New Democrats will reach out to indigenous communities to discuss how we can work together to build a nation-to-nation relationship based on respect, rights and trust. We will continue to work with indigenous peoples to ensure that everyone in Canada has the same access to opportunity and lasting prosperity.
