OTTAWA – As the midwives associations from across Canada meet in Ottawa this week, NDP Health Critic Libby Davies (Vancouver East) and NDP MP Peggy Nash (Parkdale-High Park) are co-hosting an event to discuss how to best improve child and maternal health in Canada.
“Access to quality maternal care close to home not only contributes to improved maternal and newborn health, it strengthens communities and families,” said Davies.
Tomorrow in the House of Commons, Peggy Nash will table a Private Member’s Bill proposing the establishment of a National Day of the Midwife.
“Midwives and midwifery services are a vital part of the maternity care system all across Canada,” said Nash. “By declaring May 5th National Day of the Midwife, we aim to increase public awareness of the extraordinary contribution midwives make to maternal, newborn, and infant care.”
